About Brage

Brage-gruppen

Brage is UMB’s institutional open research archive.

Its objective is to provide secure, long-term digital storage of research work produced at the university, and to make this work publicly available free of charge via the internet. The main purpose of a university’s open research archive is to contribute to the widest possible dissemination of publicly financed research for the benefit of further research, education, business and industry, the media and interested members of the general public.

The archive shall also ensure digital storage and publishing of doctoral theses and Master's theses produced at UMB.

Open Access
Open access publishing is a major global trend. The internet makes it possible to spread scientific documents quickly and efficiently to anyone who is interested, regardless of geographical distance. Naturally, it is in the best interests of research that research results are as accessible as possible so that they can be applied and utilised. UMB participates in the development of open access through Brage.

It is becoming increasingly common for those who allocate research funds to stipulate guidelines that ensure open access to research results. This applies to the Research Council of Norway, among others.

Publication and rights
Brage makes UMB's research results available to the world at large. This does not mean that Brage competes with publishing companies. Articles published in scientific journals can normally be published in parallel in Brage. This also applies if an author transfers rights to a publisher in connection with the publication of an article. Most publishing companies will permit such parallel publication in the author’s institutional archive. However, the final version of the article (the publisher’s PDF) cannot usually be published. It is therefore important that, as author, you keep the final version of your articles after peer review, but before printing.
