Do you have questions about webmail? You might find the answer here…

Full inbox / unable to delete messages
Do you get an error-message when you try to delete a message? This might be because your inbox is full. The "Trash"-folder does not empty itself. Meaning that every message you delete will remain in this folder until you empty it. Empty this folder first. Now you should be able to delete other messges. If your inbox is very full, you might have to delete one by one. If you're not able to delete them one by one, send us an e-mail with your username and the errormessage you get, and we will rise your quota temporarily.

Password
Your e-mail can be access by using your zone2 password. We don't have access to your password. If you don't remember your password, the solurion is to create a new zone2 password.

SPAMfilter
The server is filtering spam. Some messages will be tagged with ***SPAM*** and still come to your inbox. We have created a tutorial on how to filter tagged messages.

POP3
POP3 is closed. This means that for those who wish to use a mailclient to check mail, you'll have to use the IMAPs protocoll. We recommend Mozilla Thunderbird as a mailclient as it is free and easy to configure. We have made a tutorial for configuring Mozilla Thunderbird.
Forwarding your studentmail
This explains how you can forward your student e-mail to a different e-mail adress:

  1. Download PuTTy:

From the computer rooms at university campus: Log in as usual and open putty.exe wich you can find in the folder I:\datatjen\programmer\putty

From a private computer: Download PuTTY, and start the program.
                                                                      _
  2. Fill in information in PuTTy:

In the field "hostname", enter student.umb.no (For student organizations, choose "studorg" instead of "student").  Make shure that the option SSH is checked, then choose [Open].  Log in with your user name and password.
  3. Edit forwarding information in PuTTy terminal:

    Method 1:
To forward your mails without leaving a copy at the student mailserver, enter the following:
    echo your.email@adress.com >> .forward

If you wish to leave a copy at the server, enter the following instead:
    echo "/home/student/username/Maildir/" > .forward && echo your.email@adress.com >> .forward

To deactivate forwarding, enter the following:
    rm .forward

    Method 2:
    Write: nano .forward
You will most likely have a line saying "/home/student/brukernavn/Maildir/" already.  This line of code makes sure you receive emails to your student email account.  Press enter to create a new line.  Now you can enter additional email addresses which you want to receive the same emails.  After you are finished editing type 'ctrl' + 'x'.  The editing window will close and you will og back to the PuTTy editing window.

If you choose to leave a copy at the mailserver, make sure that you delete unnecessary e-mails once in a while, as you have a limited amount of space at your disposition.

Additional information

Because of security issues the following attachments are blocked in the UMB e-mail system: exe, vbs, pif, scr, bat, cmd, com, dll, zip

The reason for this is simple, as these file types very often contain viruses, and the rarely number of need to send these file types. Zip is the only exception, but as the danger for viruses in zip files is frequent, these file types are also blocked. If you in case need to send zip-files the easiest solution is to change the file type from “.zip” to for example “.zi”. The receiver will then get the file, but have to rename the file type back to “.zip” in order to make the OS understand that the file have to be extracted.
