New student at UMB? Look here!

Datatjenesten

Welcome as a student at UMB! This article is intended as a simple introduction to how IT-systems that is in use here at UMB is working for you as a student. Here you'll find, among other things, information about the user name and password, Internet at SiÅs flats and the Internet on campus.

User account
All students receive a user account. With this account you will gain access to a number of things, like computers on UMB computerlabs, homearea, mail, ClassFronter and the wireless network. The account is made up of a user name and 2 passwords that are used in different zones:

- Zone1: machines at the computerlabs and printer terminal.
- Zone2: e-mail, Web site, ClassFronter, VPN  and wireless networks
-

We've created a guide for the user name and password regarding what you need to do, to take advantage of user account.
You can enter the passwordsite by going to http://password.umb.no

Homearea on the studentserver
As a student at UMB you'll have your own space with a capacity of 500MB on one of our servers. This space is your private, and only you have access to it. The homearea will appear as a disk (H:) when you log on to a computer on a computerlab. Keep track of your home, for example, by giving each subject a separate folder. Use the space you are assigned here to the academic files. Guide to get access to your homearea from your private computer.

Your mail
In addition, all the students assigned a 300MB e-mail account, with the corresponding address username@student.umb.no. This e-mail account, you are obliged to use as long as you are student here, ALL INFORMATION FROM THE ADMINISTRATION ARE ONLY SENT TO THIS ADDRESS! Log on to Webmail to access e-mail.
Here you'll find more information on e-mail to students.

Internetaccess from private computer
Internet in SiÅs-flats
If you hire a flat from SiÅs, you can get access to the wired network. We've created a guide to register your computer on the network at the SiÅs flat, and how to register your ethernet MAC-adress. Those living in Høgskoleveien 11, 13 and 16, Kajaveien 16, Samfunnsveien 2 and 4 should register their WIRELESS MAC-adress. You log in with your user name and zone2 password . Please note that you can only sign one computer per flat, so if you want to have more than one computer on the Net, you must obtain a router that you sign instead of your computer. ALL USERS OF THE UMB-NETWORK ARE REQUIRED TO USE F-SECURE ANTIVIRUS. This is free for all students, and can be downloaded from the link above.

Internet on campus
On campus there are two ways of acquiring internet access. Wireless is available in almost all the buildings. See here for a guide on how to connect to Eduroam. More information on Eduroam here. In some cases it is possible to obtain internetaccess via cable.

Computerlabs
Computerlabs is present in all institutes, and most buildings. Some of these are open, while others are locked and require access. If you need access to a locked ward, please contact the reseption in your institute, which then forward your request. Some labs are reserved for students from this institution. The computers on the labs are initially intended for professional activity, and it is therefore limited rights on the machines. This means, among other things, that no students are allowed to install applications. There is also no way to run programs from the USB disk or the like. The folder ‘My Documents’ points automatically to your home H:, so that nothing is stored locally (meaning that, ‘my documents’ contain the same regardless of the hall or machine you use).
Do not save things on the desktop, as this will be deleted without further notice.

Printers
UMB has printers available for students in 14 locations. Most of the printers have features such as copying, A3 and colour printing, however a few of them have only A4 black and white. Identification and payment is arranged through your studentcard (prepayment).
Details about how to print on these printers are found here.

In addition, SiÅs has an offer through its print shop, Rotator.

Homepage
As a student at UMB, you have the opportunity to post your own home page on the server student.umb.no. The homepage will give you the address http://student.umb.no/ ~ yourusername Guide to post a home page on student.umb.no.

Access to internal resources from outside UMB
By using a VPN connection to the server student.vpn.umb.no you can gain access to internal resources, even if you sit outside UMBs network. This means that you can sit at home and access, among other things, BIBSYS the entire database of full-text articles. For this VPN connection use your username and zone2 password.
