Anne Chapuis

Anne Chapuis, 25, PhD student in Glaciology, Master degree in Earth Sciences (France).

The main goal of my PhD project is to get a better understanding of how glaciers respond to climate change through the study of iceberg calving in Svalbard.

The main interests in my career lie in nature preservation and in the effort to bridge the gap between science and the public.

Petter Hieronymus Heyerdahl

Petter Hieronymous Heyerdahl is a civil engineer from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (1980), specialising in electronics and cybernetics. He has worked at the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, The National Institute of Technology, Samkjoringen and at UMB since 1981. He teaches energy and electronics courses and has tutored around 100 masters students in environmental physics, circulation technology and renewable energy. He has also been involved in establishing civil engineering study programmes in environmental physics and renewable energy at UMB.

Heyerdahl holds a handfull of patents and has founded companies focusing on circulation technology, aqua culture, measurement technology and renewable energy. He is also the man behind several industrial fish farming products and having been through several bankruptcies, he is still an optimist.

Heyerdahl is currently researching energy systems, bioenergy, energy converters, distributed energy and end user efficiency. Heyerdahl is also involved in developing a strong centre for renewable energy at Ås campus with excellent laboratories for research and teaching and to motivate young people to continue choosing scientific subjects beyond  comprehensive school.

Kine Halvorsen Thorén
Kine Halvorsen Thorén is Professor of Landscape Architecture at UMB. She has for many years studied how the current concentration based urban development affects urban nature, green structure and quality of outdoor public areas in the city as a whole and in housing areas close to schools etc.

At present, Thorén is studying how neighbourhoods and urban environments affect physical activity among young people in a public health perspective. Thorén has also carried out numerous research and development projects on method development in landscape architecture and planning, as well as studies and evaluations of how planning measures influence building quality.

Thorén’s research is both interdisciplinary and applied. She has also worked at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR), and has carried out research projects for environmental authorities such as the Directorate for Nature Management and the Ministry of the Environment, often resulting in public advice on green structure and concentration challenges.

Thorén is a popular speaker within her field of research and finds it important to participate in the current public urban planning debate.
