Eurodoc Survey I
The first Eurodoc Survey on Doctoral Candidates in Twelve European countriesAuthors: Gülay Ateş, Karoline Holländer, Nadia Koltcheva, Snežana Krstić, Filomena Parada

Eurodoc Survey I is one of the first studies on the situation of doctoral candidates and junior researchers at a European level. This report, unique in its wideness, is an excellent means of identifying some important issues affecting researchers at an early stage. The investigation intends to deliver relevant information and trends in doctoral education.

The first Eurodoc Survey was conducted in 2008/2009 throughout Europe. The final descriptive report analyses the current situation of more than 7500 doctoral candidates in twelve countries (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden). Its intent is to answer to questions about the situation concerning present employment, social benefits and working conditions of doctoral candidates and junior researchers and about the differences regarding models of doctoral education across Europe. The findings include information on qualification requirements, career paths, funding schemes, models of training and supervision, working conditions, expected and achieved results of scientific work and mobility. These subjects have been frequently discussed in higher education and policy making focussing on the doctoral phase in the last decade.

One of the most important conclusions of Eurodoc Survey I is that the vast majority of doctoral candidates and junior researchers are not aware of the European Charter of Researchers and to the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers published by the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/eracareers/pdf/am509774CEE_EN_E4.pdf). Finally, in most European countries, doctoral candidates should have more opportunities to conduct research at an international level in order to actively contribute not only to their personal development in particular, but also more generally to the Knowledge Society. Eurodoc Survey I was published in October 2011.
