Riis-Johansen opens Bioenergy Centre with well-aimed blow

Henrik Mikkelsen

The chips flew when the Minister for Oil and Energy, Terje Riis- Johansen, opened the new Bioenergy Centre at Ås with a well-aimed blow at a log on the chopping block.

"I regard the environment at UMB, Bioforsk and the Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute as central contributors for realising Norway's considerable potential in this arena. Bioenergy will be able to contribute as an important source of energy in the future and I am pleased to note considerable faith in the future of the bioenergy industry in Norway", said Terje Riis- Johansen in his opening speech.

The Government has set a target for production of 14 TWh bioenergy by 2020.

The opening ceremony was in Sørhellinga building where the Centre leases premises for part of its activities. The Centre is a cooperation between the Norwegian University for Life Sciences (UMB), Bioforsk and the Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute.

The Centre shall research the social, environmental and financial consequences of using biomass and contribute to the development of sustainable technology and holistic analyses in this area.

The research areas that will be given priority are biogas, biofuels, bioheating and sustainable analyses. In addition, the centre will be central in the education of students in renewable energy and bioenergy in particular.
