Thor Heyerdahl Professorship at UMB

Henrik Mikkelsen

The announcement for applications for the new Thor Heyerdahl Professorship at UMB’s Department of International Environment and Development Studies, Noragric, was released on 12 April. The professorship is the first of its kind in Europe.

The 4-year professorship is the result of an agreement between UMB and the Thor Heyerdahl Institute, and is funded by NOK 2,3 million from each partner. The objective of the Heyerdahl Institute is to promote and develop the research and development ideals that were central to Thor Heyerdahl’s life and work. The professorship will be linked to UMB’s Health and Development programme.

Thor Heyerdahl is one of the most famous Norwegians abroad. He was a gifted communicator and controversial in his research throughout his life. He captivated much of the world with his Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947 and other expeditions. The establishment of a professorship in his name will contribute to research methodology based on interdisciplinary expertise. UMB was deemed the best university to house the new professorship by the Heyerdahl Institute.

UMB’s “Health and Development” programme was launched in 2006. This programme includes projects on post-disaster reconstruction with a focus on water quality and sanitation and hygienic practices in Pakistan, as well as projects on food safety including both policy considerations and residual pesticides. The programme will expand in the future to cover more issues and geographic areas. A review of the ongoing projects, strengthening of the interdisciplinary academic platform and identification and prioritisation of research problems in partner countries will be carried out prior to expanding the programme. The Thor Heyerdahl professor will also be expected to teach and develop new courses.

“We are very pleased to host this exciting new professorship at Noragric”, says Head of Department, Professor Ruth Haug. “The name ‘Thor Heyerdahl’ conjures up challenges and crossing boundaries to test theories and find novel solutions. The UMB programme on Health and Development is all about new challenges: it is designed to encourage and support new thinking and new approaches where health stands central. Its vision is that the university shall be recognised nationally and internationally for its academic excellence and contributions in the field of health, particularly within the areas of food, nature, water and development.”

Details about the position and how to apply can be found on the Noragric homepage or from the UMB Vacant positions link. Deadline is 12 May 2007.
