On October 14, UMB will plant a tree in her memory.

Maathai's commitment was inseparably linked to forestry and trees in her efforts to improve conditions for women in Kenya. Since the 1980s, more than 40 million trees have been planted in Maathai's home country and the Green Belt Movement, founded by Maathai, has expanded to several other countries.

Planting trees as an environmental protection measure helps improve conditions for the local population. Granting the wishes of Maathai's family, UMB joins her friends and supporters in all countries and will plant a tree (green dot on the map) in her memory and honour on Friday October 14. Students, staff and others are invited to take part in the ceremony.
