The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) has Norway’s most international campus. Today we are welcoming 205 students from 60 nations as they begin their education here. Next week the Norwegian students will arrive.

UMB has a long history of offering education to students from developing countries. This year there are 60 students from Africa and 43 from Asia. The biggest group is nevertheless students from Europe (81). From North America and Australia there are altogether 16 students.

There has been an increase of students from Europe and North America in the last years. “We are glad that more and more students from these countries discovering the studies that UMB has to offer”, says the manager for international programs and networking, Thorbjørn Gilberg.

Approximately half of the international students come to take their masters degree at UMB. 85 students come with a variety of exchange programs, and 11 will be doing their PhD’s.

During their first week the international students will, among other things, learn more about Norwegian culture and lifestyle. They will do some sightseeing in Oslo, and later in the fall go on an excursion to Rondane National Park.

Monday the 13th of August is the official beginning of classes for all the new students. But, beginning on August 10th many will begin to move into the student residences and complete the registration process. UMB has an accommodation guarantee for all first year students.

With 4.8% more first-time students, UMB is the university with the greatest increase this year, despite a national decrease in those seeking higher education. Therefore, the admission requirements for many programs at UMB are remaining high, while several are increasing them. 777 students received offers to study at UMB this year.

The Student Information Centre and a little army of experienced “buddies” are standing ready to settle the new students into their new daily life.

Ås is the only university campus in Norway that is not found in a city. Therefore student life on campus is very important, and a multitude of teams, clubs, and student organizations can be found. “I would encourage all new students to take an active part in student life when they come to UMB. To be a student does not just mean to develop disciplinary knowledge,” says Trine Hvoslef-Eide the pro-rector for education.
