International cooperation

KA

The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) has several decades of experience with international institutional cooperation. Many institutional agreements with universities outside Norway have been active since the late 1960s.

International strategy
The UMB strategic plan points to internationalisation as important to the university, focusing in particular on international exchange and competence building, but also on establishing strong academic networks.

UMB's international strategy (Norwegian and English) can be found here.

Cooperation agreements
UMB has exchange agreements with more than 50 universities worldwide, including six Nordic, 44 European and eight North American institutions. In the Nordic context, UMB is active together with six other Nordic universities in NOVA (see below).

UMB and the University of Minnesota collaboration
The purpose of this cooperation is to form Transatlantic Research Teams of scientists, undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Minnesota (UMN) and Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB)

The NOVA University Network was formally established in 1995 and consists of 7 member universities. NOVA’s general objective is to increase the scope of cooperation between these member institutions, thereby improving the quality of research and education. This is achieved by student and teacher mobility, developing NOVA undergraduate, graduate and doctorate courses as well as complete joint NOVA study programmes, in which tasks are divided between the different institutions. Research cooperation, based on the strengths of the member institutions, also promotes improved quality of research. NOVA also markets its activities internationally, e.g., via cooperation projects with the Baltic Sea region, developing countries and the EU.

North-South cooperation
UMB has several formal frameworks for North-South cooperation:
NUFU
NORAD programme for Master Studies (NOMA)
The Quota Scheme

Institutional partnerships with universities in developing countries are carried out mainly through the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric).
