Animal and Aquacultural Sciences
Food Quality and Safety, 4th Thematic call Milk and dairy products with optimised bioactivity
Liv Lønne Dille
The Norwegian University of Life Sciences, represented by the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences, works with new breeding and feeding strategies of milk producing cows and goats with the objective to produce milk with optimised bioactivity with special emphasis on protein and fat quality.

Our aims: Our objective is to produce milk with specific characteristics and qualities regarding protein content and protein quality, fat content and composition of fatty acids, trace minerals and vitamins, to meet current and future demands as to nutrition and health benefits.

Our expertise: In our department we have for a number of years had a focus on the study of the physiology of milk production, including rumen physiology, the physiology of digestion, and the physiology of lactation. We have an approved metabolism stall for milk cows, and extensive expertise within the collection and analysis of biological material from the digestive tract, blood and udder tissue. We routinely perform studies of individual feed components and feed compositions on lactating cows. We have facilities for in-depth physiological studies on individual cows, as well as for extensive production studies in ecological and in conventional units. We have modern equipment for feed processing - forage as well as concentrates.
Ongoing research: We are currently working on a national level project focussing on optimal milk production on pasture. “Optimal” as concerns the nutritional quality of the milk produced, and also as concerns grassland management and the economy of the milk producers. This national programme incorporates cooperation between:
- Scientists working in genetics, nutrition and physiology of milk producing animals
- Plant and environmental science
- Dairy food science
- Crop research institutes
- Food research institutes
- Veterinary medicine
- Feed industry
- Dairy cattle breed association
- National Dairy Herd Recording System
- Norway’s Dairy Cooperative Organisation (TINE)
The above research institutions, businesses and organisations represent the entire dairy product chain. The project also aims to take into consideration the ongoing work for the maintenance of the cultural landscape.
We are looking for partners especially within human nutrition and health.
