Food safety and food supply main themes at EAAP2011

Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA) and the animal husbandry industries have been central in arranging the European Federation of Animal Science 2011 congress (EAAP 2011).
The congress took place in Stavanger Forum conference centre from August 29th to September 2nd, and was attended by more than one thousand participants from 55 countries.
The main theme at the congress was the role of animal production for food safety and food supply in the world today and in the future.New research results were presented in the course of five hectic days with a wide variety of sessions.There were 9 parallel sessions with a total of 503 presentations and 350 posters from a series of countries, as well as invited speakers. It was also possible to take part in workshops and discussions on the latest discoveries within animal sciences and aquaculture, says Ina Andersen-Ranberg, who has acted as Executive Secretary and has handled large parts of the arrangement.
On Tuesday, a plenary session focused on the technological requirements of animal production. There was also a separate session on food quality in “Måltidshuset” in Stavanger.
The national organizers this year have included President, Local Organising Committee, Dr. Torbjørn Auran of Felleskjøpet Fôrutvikling, President, Local Scientific Committee, Professor Odd Vangen of IHA and Executive Secretary, Dr. Ina Andersen-Ranberg of Norsvin.
In addition to the international board, EAAP is organized through a national committee in each membership country. The Norwegian committee of EAAP is led by Professor Odd Vangen of IHA, and scientists from IHA, Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and Geno head the various scientific areas.
Professor Odd Vangen elected Vice President
At this year’s congress, Professor Odd Vangen of IHA was elected Vice President of the international EAAP board.
Scientific writing course for PhD students
In connection with the congress, PhD students from many of the participating countries had the opportunity to attend a workshop on the writing and presentation of scientific articles.Interbull, the reference centre for evaluation of pedigree breeding cattle (bulls) also arranged its yearly meeting in Stavanger in the days leading up to the EAAP congress
Boat trip to Byrkjedalstunet
An evening excursion was arranged to go by boat to Byrkjedalstunet (in Dirdal) and partake of a meal in Gloppehallen, a 950m2 hall built deep into the mountain. Here, the participants were treated to traditional Norwegian food and a program of Norwegian folk dancing and music.On the last day of the congress there were several technical tours to choose from, to visit farms, a fish breeding facility or a feed production plant in the vicinity of Stavanger.
Yearly congress
The EAAP congress is a yearly event with an attendance of between 900 and 1500 participants. The event is arranged by a different membership country each year. This is the third time the congress has taken place in Norway. Next year, the host is Slovakia.
