Bakgrunn og erfaring
Olav Fjeld Kraugerud earned his MSc in applied biochemistry at NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) in 2002. For a short period of time he was laboratory assistant at Affitech AS. From 1st of January 2003 he was employed as researcher at Polypure AS, where he was in charge of developing the production of monodisperse polymers of PEG (poly ethylene glycol) and PEG-derivatives. In the beginning of 2004, he started at APC where he in 2008 finished his PhD.

Research
The overall task for Mr. Kraugerud is to outline physical properties and behaviour of polysaccharides in fish feed. Mainly for carnivore species such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), Rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykis) and Cod (Gadus morhua).

The work was divided in two main areas:

-Starch
-NSP (non starch polysaccharides)

The aim is to outline processing properties for starch. This includes optimising extrusion parameters for beneficial gelatinisation. There we may ensure the physical quality of the pellet and the digestibility of the feed. Processing will be performed by using the pilot plant at UMB (FôrTek). Consecutive analysis will include energetic behaviour (i.e. Differential Scanning Calorimetry, DSC).

NSP’s are a broad group of polysaccharides and their composition depends on the source (i.e. lupins, soy, rape seed). The aim will be to explore the behaviour of these polysaccharides when it comes to effect on overall digestibility and to seek explanations of their effect. In the first place the studies will focus on digestibility of NSP’s and their physical properties in the digestion process. The broadness of the projects is secured by collaboration with the GH group.

The title of the Thesis is "Physical and nutritional properties of polysaccharides in extruded fish feed"
