Aquaculture at IHA
Janne Karin Brodin
The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA) has a long track-record and many ongoing projects within the area of aquaculture. The first national Norwegian breeding program in salmon was initiated from this department and the research institute Nofima Marin was branched out from the department and have been co-located within the department facilities since the start in 1974.

IHA is still developing as an aquaculture centre, and has recently been strengthened by the co-localisation of three centres,
Center for Feed Technology,
Aquaculture Protein Centre and
Centre for Integrative Genetics.
IHA covers the following areas within aquaculture;
- Breeding, genetics and genome analysis.
(Contact Hans Magnus Gjøen)- Simulation models for optimisation of breeding schemes
- Applied breeding programs in many species, e.g. salmon, tilapia
- Theoretical development of statistical models for genetic analysis, e.g. QTLs
- Functional genomics (including mapping of complex traits)
- Ethology
- Stress in context of both physiological and genetic models – including a unique high- and low-line of rainbow trout selected for cortisol response to stress
- Feed and nutrition
- New and alternative feed sources for aquaculture production
- Development of new techniques for fish nutrition research
- Feed manufacturing (Contact Birger Svihus)
- Effect of process conditions and ingredients in the production of all types of fish feed.
- Health (Contact Ragnar Salte)
- Disease mechanisms
- The pathophysiology of circulation (salmonids)
- Where epidemiology and genetics meet (salmonids, carps, shrimp
- Product quality (Contact Magny Thomassen)
- Lipid metabolism and quality of salmon, cod and halibut
- Handling, stress, feeding and chilling in relation to rigor development and quality of salmon
- Use of Computer assisted Tomography (CT) in fish quality determinations
- Feed additives and cod quality
- Tropical aquaculture (Contact Hans Magnus Gjøen)
- Special focus on tilapia production
