The project will develop practical implementations of optimal contribution (OC) selection for cattle, pig and sheep breeding schemes in order to make the management of inbreeding feasible in practice and to increase the sustainability of the Norwegian animal breeding industries.
Detailed aims are:
1. Develop a computer simulation model that simulates the genetic evolution of populations. The simulation model will include a selection program, and alternative forms of marker information.
2. Make OC selection account for the limited reproduction capacity of many types of breeding animals, especially breeding females.
3. Develop tools in OC selection to handle multiple stages of selection instead of a single selection step as currently assumed in OC selection.
4. Develop software tool for OC selection that can handle the large scale of national breeding schemes and entails the previous developments.
