I am at present mainly working for the city council of Oslo, performing planning and construction administration for playgrounds of new nursery schools.
Future Research - PhD-project
Since 1995 I have been working as a landscape architect for various private companies in Oslo. During the last 10 years, there has been an increasing political effort and focus on obtaining equal possibilities for all children to attend nursery school. The city council of Oslo has been able to produce approximately 3000 new places during the past three years, while the demand has soared to 9000, in the same period.
As a landscape architect I have had the possibility to perform planning and construction administration for about 10 new nursery schools in Oslo since 2005. All the projects have been done in collaboration with two different architect companies. One of the projects has been recognised as the biggest nursery school so far in Norway (temporary nursery school with 400 admissions). Being part of the planning and building process, I have seen many inconsistencies between expectations and the actual outcome.
All parties engaged (politicians, official planners and employees) strive for best possible quality, but they do not refere to the same definition. Time pressure and value for money are also prevailing factors.
Conflicts of interest (i.e. lack of land, demands the use of green structures in the city) and somewhat inexperience among decision makers, make the planning process confusing, and the quality of the outcome rather poor. I intend to investigate the following: “Building new nursery schools in Oslo; regulations, expectations and outcome.
A study of playgrounds built for new nursery schools in the period 2000 - 2008.” I will try to identify where the planning process has failed, suggest ways to improve the planning process, thus secure a more predictable standard and quality. I will also investigate which standards are secured by regulations and law in contrast to personal opinions among the parties engaged.
