Himalayan Degradation Project

Kjersti Bakkebø

An interdisciplinary Approach do Analyze the Dynamics of Forest and Soil Degradation and to Develop Sustainable Agro-Ecological Strategies For Fragile Himalayan Watersheds

Objectives and brief description:
The overall objective of the project is to analyze the dynamics of forest and soil degradation processes at the watershed level in the Himalayan region. The focus is on studying the systems behavior in its entirety and to develop sustainable management strategies, which are technically feasible, economically viable, and socially acceptable.

The study will provide a scientific basis for identifying sound policy options for the management of forests and soils of the Himalayan watersheds in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. Within the stipulated project period, a set of scientific papers, computer models of forest and soil degradation processes, reports, guidelines and recommendations for scientists, policy makers and local land users will be delivered.

The project was started November 2001 and was finished in 2006.
