UMB School of Economics and Business
HH’s football team won the milk bucket

After 10 years without any trophies, the team of the UMB School of Economics and Business (HH) became the best UMB team in the local football cup on Friday 9. September. UMS’s trophy for team sports – the milk bucket – is for the next 12 months in the hands of the department. A total of 13 teams from UMB and other clubs in Ås participated, just one short of the number in the Norwegian Premier League. The competition was therefore unusually stiff.
The team’s strong performance is a direct result of several good signings during the winter and summer transfer windows. While the average age of the team has a bad tendency of increasing by almost one year for every new season, manager Ragnar Øygard has purposely recruited new PhD scholars with skills beyond the scholarly abilities.
The result was visible already in the first match, where Follo Corporate Health Services was beaten 5-0 after a solid display of German efficiency. The opponent emphasized – with limited success – preventive work in defense.
After being unbeaten during the group play, the semi final turned out as dramatic as any Champions League final. After 90 minutes (or perhaps 20) the score was 0-0, and a penalty shootout was unavoidable. One of HH’s new recruits, a Danish central defender, scored confidently on an innovative first kick. The team’s professor lectured on mixed strategies in penalty shootouts, that is, to shoot left-middle-right randomly. However, the subsequent shoots became too random, and after all the field players have shot the score was still 1-1. Last man out was the goalie, another new signature in finance, who puts the ball across the line, and saved the next penalty. He has secured an option for the goalie position throughout his contract period.
In the final HH met the team of the Teachers Association in Ås. The latter consists of several physical fitness teachers, and could therefore be considered semi-professionals. In spite of a good fight, HH was beaten 4-2, but the silver medal secured the spot as the best UMB team.
The HH football team was also the most international team of the tournament, with players from Japan (Yohei Mitani), Ethiopia (Daniel Muluwork Atsbeha), Sunnmøre (Kenneth Løvold Rødseth), Denmark (Casper Claudi Rasmussen), Germany (Stefan Flugel) and Norway (Fredrik Andersen, Arild Angelsen, Lars Mørk, Erik Smith-Meyer).
