The announcement of this year Nobel Peace Prize award winner, Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, was received with excitement among the people of Bangladesh. Mohammad Saidur Rahman, a first year’s student at the MSc programme in Development and Resource Economics, heard the news from a reporter from Østlandets Blad:
“It was really very exciting and the best news that one can get about their origin and the best news for a country like Bangladesh. I did not know when I faced this interview with journalist Inger Eidem of “Østlandets Blad”. I am proud of my country Bangladesh. I am proud of our famous economist and father (creator) of Grameen Bank Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel peace winner 2006.”
Mohammad Saidur Rahman met the prizewinner at a few occasions, and he has high thoughts of the Professor in Economics:
“I met him in two seminars that he held at Bangladesh Agricultural University where I am a teacher. He is a very good speaker and his depth of knowledge simply unexplainable and it is now well recognized. I met one field officer of Grameen bank who was trying to convince the rural women to form a group with same-minded women members. It was really nice to get the justification of making a group. I always try to convey this message to the under-graduate students of my class in agricultural economics”.
The idea of micro credits is strongly related to Rahman’s studies in Development Economics, and this award has motivated him to learn more about micro financing throughout his Master studies. As the ideas and the profession of Dr. Yunus and the Grameen Bank is strongly linked with central areas of study at UMB, Mohammad Saidur Rahman is challenging UMB to try to get a visit from Dr. Yunus in the near future.
