Seeds of Ribes biebersteinii (Berl.) marked 92-3185 collected at about 2000 metre above sea level in Georgia
by Anders Often, Botanical Department, Tromsø Museum, were at first distributed to Ragnar T. Samuelsen, Holt Agricultural Research Station. He got in touch with the author asking for our interest in taking over. The seeds arrived in Ås in the autumn 1992. They germinated 1994, and 25 seedlings were transplanted into the field that summer.

It was early obvious that this Ribes species generally is not adapted to our growing condition. In the fourth season three seedlings died, in the fifth additional one seedling, and it continued, number of survivors decreased year by year. At the end of screening in 2009 just Selection L I 1/8-09 (marked Ribes biebersteinii Johans) (Picture 1) had survived. It has been grown in Ås for16 years, and thus it seems to perform well enough some places in our country.

The seedlings flowered with rich red coloured flowers on long racemes, some bearing above 40 flowers in the raceme. All plants that reached flowering phase produced black berries. The first 10 produced berries in the fifth season. None was large fruited. The taste was sour.
