Send application for participation to Anne.Golten@umb.no, indicating how far you are in your PhD studies, and at what university you are registered. If you are not a student, tell about your education level in animal breeding and current occupation. 20 NOVA PhD students are eligible for free covering of course fees and food and lodging (in double rooms - approx 150 EUR extra to pay for single room). Others have to pay a course fee and for their food and lodging (approx 1150 EUR). Course costs 1200 EUR.  All (?except BOVA students?) have to pay their voyage.

By March 7 we have accepted 3 participants from Denmark, 3 from Sweden, 6 from Finland, and 6 from Norway, in addition to 3 from the committee. Also accepted are 1 from Lithuania and 1 from China (now in Denmark).

These are contacted by email according to their entry in the Nova database (see below) - some have not registered - please do.

The 3 from Sweden and 3 from Denmark have sponsored Nova places, and need not pay for food/lodging and course fee. The 6 from Finland and 6 from Norway will have to pay part of the food/lodging (approx 1200 eur) if the total number of Nova students exceed 20.

After March 7 we have accepted another 2 Swedes, and 1 postdoc from Norway.

First round of acceptance of attendants was March 7, 2010 (to allow you to make travel arrangements). Thereafter on a running basis according to available places. Last delay for application for available Nova grant (Danes and Icelandic): April 11, 2010.

PREREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
You will be using R for solving exercises at the course, so before the course starts you should be able to handle R.

Install R on the computer you will be bringing to the course, and solve the problems below. Make a group and collaborate if you can. When you have installed R, work on Schaeffer\'s exercises below using his \'R Basics\', and \'An Introduction to R\' or other reference material.

Larry Schaeffer wrote:

...\'Google \"CRAN\" (Comprehensive R Archive Network).  Under that they have Manuals, and there is an introductory manual (pdf).\'... The manual is about 100 pages. Use it for support. ...\'This is also the website from where the R software can be downloaded.  Everyone should get a copy for their laptops or the computer they will be using during the course.\'...

...\'As you read through the manual, it is best to try out the commands as you read.  With R you have to keep using it in order to remember it.

Once you learn it, it can be very useful.  A few people here use it mostly for graphing.

There is also my course website which I will use for the course.  Under the NOTES section is a set of notes called \"R Basics\"  which might be useful too.\'... (see http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/~lrs/ABModels/notesx.html for \'R Basics\'.)

Solve the exercises in http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/~lrs/ABModels/HWK09/matrix.pdf.

(A tilde \'~\' should be entered before \'lrs\' in the web reference on the top of page 2: http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/~lrs/ABMethods/DATA/)

Tell me (Tormod.Adnoy@umb.no) when you have succeeded, or if you have problems.

EXAM
Those of you who want a documentation of competence for the 5 ects in the course will have to pass an exam after the course. It will be a written take home exam to be handed in by August 15 2010.Others may have a certificate of participation.
