The portal is tailored for use in an international, academic environment, and its main focus is thus helping you write better English. However, you will also find numerous Norwegian resources, as well as links to multilingual glossaries.

As a student, scientist, teacher or university administrator you are constantly using language: when taking exams, making presentations, writing letters, lectures and articles.

Academia
depends on the constant development of new, clear thoughts – thoughts that are expressed through language. Language is thus not only a “useful tool” for research and education – it is the actual mainstay of our daily work.

The road to increased linguistic awareness – and thus to clearer thoughts – goes via the combined use of mother tongue(s) and foreign language(s).

The goal should be achieving functional bi- or multilinguism. Use and cultivate your mother tongue(s) whenever it suits or is needed, but also use time to improve your foreign language skills.

Once you do develop your second and third language skills, your awareness for language in general increases, which in turn will improve your native tongue. We hope you find useful language resources and inspiration for further learning on UMB’s language portal.
