Noragric plays an active role in national and international committees and networks, in advisory roles for....
... the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (
NORAD) and the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as for multilateral institutions. Noragric also plays an active role in institutional collaboration with partners in developing countries, and in collaboration with various national and international civil society organisations. These activities ensure that the knowledge and experience that have been developed in collaboration between Noragric and its partners are put to use for the benefit of development processes in developing countries and countries with an economy in transition, and to shorten the loop between knowledge generation and knowledge utilisation.
Noragric makes use of the expertise of not only its own staff but also of the staff of the UMB departments, independent research institutions located in Ås, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science in Oslo, and other associated institutions in Norway. When composing teams of experts for a specific project, we also involve regional or domestic experts whenever possible, frequently from our partner universities and partner institutions in the South.
The Environmental Assistance Centre (framework) agreement In 1999 NORAD and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs set up agreements with seven partner centres for environmental advisory services related to developing countries. The contract with UMB/Noragric was signed in January 2000. The main purpose of these centres is to develop and make available professional expertise to be used in environment related development projects. Noragric was selected as the centre for assistance related to:
- sustainable production systems (forestry, animal husbandry, agriculture and aquaculture);
- sustainable use and management of genetic resources relevant to agriculture;
- food security and livelihood improvement with special emphasis on drylands, and
- institutional development and management of natural resources, with a focus on local participation, community empowerment and land tenure.
Other Norwegian institutions under this agreement include the
Ministry of Environment and its operational directorates (the
Directorate for Nature Management, the
Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the
Norwegian Pollution Control Authority and the
Norwegian Mapping Authority) as well as the
Norwegian Institute for Marine Research. All centres were specifically selected to undertake responsibilities within their relevant areas of competence.
