Brazilian workers' rights and the international trade regime

Joanna Boddens-Hosang

PhD student Simon Pahle's research is featured in NorLARNet (Norwegian Latin America Research Network).

One of the key questions raised by Simon in his research is whether Brazilian workers and trade unions would benefit from a social clause in the ILO - WTO linkage. He found that the majority of Brazilian trade unions are not particularly supportive of the ILO-WTO linkage. The article in NorLARNet gives a detailed account of Simon's research findings.

Simon's dissertation is called "Bringing the workers rights back in? The discourses and politics of fortifying core labor standards through a labour-trade linkage". He hopes to defend this spring.

Simon will continue research on the topic under a post doc fellowship from the Research Council of Norway's Latin America programme called “And the Last Shall Be First? Global Decent Work Efforts and the Trade Union Rights of Brazil's Farm Workers”.
