Climate Change and Development: Adaptation & Mitigation

Josie Teurlings

Noragric’s strength lies in interdisciplinarity and critical analyses; that is, we study climate change both the perspectives of soil science, agronomy, ecology, institutional economics, resilience, political ecology, livelihoods and human geography. These analyses are built on a long tradition of development and environment research at Noragric, that is, understanding of the issue of climate change in the context of societal and environmental change at large.

Noragric’s climate research has focused on five main themes:
  1. Processes of the climate system;
  2. Agricultural development (conservation agriculture etc.);
  3. Vulnerability, adaptation and development;
  4. Climate change and conflict:
  5. Policy and governance.
The first theme contributes to the first IPCC area (the physical science basis), themes 2-4 to the second IPCC area (impacts, adaptability and vulnerability), and the fifth theme to the third IPCC area (mitigation of climate change).

Climate research is carried out within all established research clusters at Noragric: Environmental governance (ENGOV);  Conflict, Human Security & Development (CHSD);  Agricultural Development, Livelihoods and Environmental Change (ADLEC);  Rights And Power in International Development (RAPID);  Resources, Rights and Governance (RRG-Net)

There is a critical mass of at least 10 senior staff who have a climate focus as well as PhD students. You find a list of ongoing projects on our project site.
