Evy JørgensenInternational crop research has produced improved agricultural technology which gives substantially increased yields of food crops, also in low-income countries. High-yielding crops are helpful in the struggle against poverty and malnutrition, but for several reasons improved technology alone cannot eradicate starvation: Many areas lack conducive environment, notably sufficient rainfall; several countries lack political commitment and financial investments in agriculture; purchasing power and other entitlements to food are too unevenly distributed. For everyone to get enough food, the poorest need to be secured purchasing power. That task cannot be accomplished by improved agricultural technology.
