My study scholarship at NordiskaAfrikainstitutet in Uppsala was running for January 2010. On my arrival I was warmly welcomed by the staff at the institute. The institute is a center for research, documentation and information on modern African in the Nordic region. It is based in Uppsala, Sweden.
NordiskaAfrikainstitutet, posses a well stocked library with literature dating back as far 1900 to the recent publications. The institute is subscribed to a number of journal articles and posses rich databases. This is mainly through its collaboration with a number of institution, including Uppsala University.
The study grant is open to students in the Nordic universities each month, and it is a moment of immense STUDY OPPORTUNITY for students writing their thesis. The scholarship covers travel costs, to and from, up keep money, accommodation in a well furnished apartment, a work place with access to fast internet, free printing and photocopy facilities and most importantly easy access to a vast resource of literature, which I bet would satisfy any “insatiable appetite” for literature.
The staff at the institute are very helpful, willing to assist at all times when contacted. Students also get the opportunity to interact with well known researcher/ writers every Wednesday during the coffee breaks during which all the staffs gather together. More socialization is possible during hockey practice every Thursdays, an event were all can take part. After a long day of work and socialization one can spare off some minutes to rejuvenate strength by relaxing on the massage chair in the institutes massage room located at the upper section of the institute.
Uppsala is a fun little university town, (way bigger than ås), 45 minutes from Stockholm. There a number of tourists’ attraction places: like one of the biggest old churches, museums, art exhibitions and so on. During school season, there are parties nearly every weekend in student nations. LotS of fun theme parties, bars, discos…..A beautiful river flows right through downtown with coffee shops, pubs, restaurants lining the bank. It’s pretty slow during the day but people seem to come out of the woodwork at night. People there, especially students are very friendly and for a second one cannot feel lost or even miss home.
Therefore, I argue students to apply for this study opportunity spiced up with lots of fun and socialization.
I am a second year master student in Development studies, writing a thesis entitled: Livelihoods, income inequality and attitudes of Households around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda.
