NUFU project in Sudan
Webmaster
In August this year NUFU announced a special programme, NUCOOP, for university collaboration with the Sudan and with emphasis on southern Sudan. In a contact visit in September we met leaders from two universities, Juba and Upper Nile Universities at their current headquarters in Khartoum and also visited those units of Juba university that have already moved as well as officials in relevant regional ministries in Juba. We worked out a joint proposal for Juba University, Upper Nile University and UMB/Noragric. The proposal was approved with some modifications. We have to scale down emphasis on PhD-education and expand on continuing education to update the qualifications of professionals working in the agricultural sector.
Juba University is on transfer to Juba, the regional capital situated on the west bank of the White Nile, not so far north of the border to Uganda. Upper Nile University has its main campus in Malakal on the confluence of the River Sobat (called Baro in Ethiopia) and the White Nile. In our application we emphasised research challenges in agrarian communities in the Equatorian region for Juba University. For Upper Nile University we emphasised pastoralism. The project has a budget of 7,3 mill. For 4 years
