PhD student Mohamed Gaas fears for safety of Norwegian ships

Joanna Boddens-Hosang

Mohamed Gaas is quoted in among others Dagens Næringsliv today (17 February 2011) as saying that the comments by Norwegian ship owner Jacob Stolt-Nielsen earlier this week about shooting Somali pirates on the spot may lead to "revenge" on Norwegian ships in the area by the pirates.

Mohamed expresses his concern about possible retaliatory actions targetted in particular to Norwegian ships and sailors as a result of Stolt-Nielsen's statements. "Confrontations between pirates and sailors will become more violent", Mohamed is quoted as saying to Dagens Næringsliv. "Killing the pirates won't solve anything. Local Somalians live with the fear of death on a daily basis".

Mohamed is a first year doctoral fellow in the PhD programme in Development Studies. His research topic is "The role and the impact of Somali Diaspora in conflicts, peace and state buildings, and the reconstructing of Somalia". His supervisor is Dr Stig Jarle Hansen.

See also Aftenposten and The Foreigner (online), the latter for an English version of Mohamed's comments to Dagens Næringsliv.
