UMB/Noragric hosting World Bank workshop on Support to African Tertiary Agricultural Education
Joanna Boddens-Hosang
On 3-5 October, UMB/Noragric is welcoming some 40 invited participants including regional African leadership in Tertiary African Education, academic experts and development partners to Ås.
Africa’s leaders have called for reform and renewed investment in tertiary agricultural education (TAE). This was recently expressed in the Ministerial Conference on Higher Education in Agriculture in Africa (CHEA), which took place in Kampala, in November 2010.
The need to strengthen TAE is also increasingly recognized by Africa’s Development Partners, who are signaling new interest in supporting TAE in Africa. A number of Development Partners (including USAID and the World Bank) are currently considering new operations related to TAE in Africa and/ or exploring ways of expanding their existing support for African TAE.
The purpose of the workshop is to:
- take stock of the lessons learned from past experience in building the capacity of African TAE and the challenges that lie ahead;
- develop a common understanding of mechanisms, program design principles, frameworks and institutions that need to be supported to build capacity in TAE;
- launch a partnership of support to the process of developing and eventually implementing an African agenda for TAE; and
- identify a programme of work for this partnership for the short and medium term.
The 3-day workshop is upon invitation only. UMB/SEVU is the practical coordinator of the workshop.
