On the 30th of January, we* started our much awaited eight hour train trip to Uppsala, Sweden. Happy that we could spend the whole month of February in Uppsala on a Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) scholarship, we decided to make the most of our time that we were going to spend at the institute. The plan was to cover as much ground on our theses as possible during that period, a task we both feel we achieved.
A change of environment, an office in the library, helpful librarians and researchers at NAI, and a lot of good literature from and about Africa, made the stay a valuable oasis. The possibility to stay there in the start of the writing process was also a very good timing, and allowed us to get our theses kick-started.
The contact with the researchers was inspiring. We were also free to join every activity that was scheduled at NAI, including floor-ball, common breakfasts, and public seminars. During our stay at NAI, we attended an interesting public seminar on women and power in post conflict countries, as well as an informative workshop on bio-fuels and land grabbing in Africa.
Uppsala is a nice city, even in a cold, snowy winter. The old city has many libraries, an amazing cathedral—the Uppsala domkyrka—and a modern concert hall with an impressing view. The river, which meanders through the city, and the botanical garden are probably better seen in another time of the year.
All practicalities were sorted out for us before we had even left Norway, and when we arrived in Uppsala, everything was already in place. We did not have to worry about any other things apart from writing our theses.
We were joined in Uppsala by a Nepalese student from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, with whom we shared an apartment, a short bus trip to and from the Institute, as well as delicious Nepalese, Norwegian and Zimbabwean cooking which was an important part of the companionship.
A month stay at NAI is absolutely recommendable. More information about the scholarship is available on the NAI website:
