WEB-based distance learning
Evy
Distance learning offers a flexible way for students to follow courses, whether they are employees requiring new input or regular students who would like to supplement or substitute other course work. Students are given access to an online website containing the course materials and in addition are provided with a CD-ROM and study material to complement the website. Communication is largely via e-mail and through an electronic discussion forum.
Using UMB's web-based distance learning platform (Fronter), 14 students followed a one semester 5-credit course in the autumn term of 2003. A major review is taking place at Noragric on distance learning, exploring how it can contribute more directly to global networks where thousands of students participate in distance learning course. Together with centres in the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), Noragric is being included in a major Internet-based effort to make highest quality agricultural education available globally by providing teaching material and facilities to universities, particularly in the developing world.
Strongly supported by the Norwegian government, the United Nations University is developing a virtual university centered on UNEP/GRID-Arendal and Agder Regional College. Noragric has expressed interest in playing a major role in the expanding concept, and a link function to the CGIAR Global Open University. At the same time Noragric continues to support web-based in-service training offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Norwegian and foreign staff members of the ministries and cooperating institutions.
