Admission to the PhD Programme - How to Apply

PhD Students at other universities wishing to take a course at UMB, can find more information here.

Minimum requirements for admission to PhD programmes at UMB
Applicants must normally have obtained a First Degree/Bachelor's degree of at least 3 years duration, or its equivalent, including courses equalling 2 years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to that of the programme applied for. Please note that at least 2nd Class, Upper Division or the equivalent is normally required to be included in the final selection for admission. Applicants must also have a Master's degree or its equivalent. Applicants whose first language is not English are normally obliged to provide the results of an English language assessment test, either the TOEFL or the IELTS test. Detailed country-specific information on English language requirements is available on NOKUT's webpages.

PhD studies
Doctoral programmes are based on a continuation in the Norwegian degree system from a master's degree or an equivalent qualification. A doctoral programme consists of course work, (an) individual research project(s) and a dissertation, which is defended in a formal oral examination.

How to apply
There are two ways to apply for a PhD position at UMB. You can apply to one of the advertised PhD positions (paid employment - please see under "Employment" below) or you can apply through a scholarship programme. Admission occurs year-round when applying for employment. If you apply through a scholarship programme, admission occurs based on the programme's application schedule. Please be aware that most institutes will only consider applicants who apply for a PhD position that has been advertised, or through the scholarship programmes.

Employment
You can find a listing for available positions here. Most announcements are in Norwegian, however some announcements are in English and you may or may not be eligible to apply. Some announcements may require that you currently reside in Norway.

Scholarships
You can find more information on available scholarships here.

Regarding Quota Scholarships: If there are Quota scholarships available for the 2010-2011 academic year, applications will be available only at the partner universities. Only employees of these universities are eligible to apply. Interested applicants should contact their home university for application deadlines and other relevant information.
