Department of Academic Affairs

PhD courses offered at UMB and certain other European universities.


When determining what courses to include in your academic training programme, refer to the PhD Regulations and consult your supervisors. A complete list of courses included in your academic training component are to be approved by the research committee at your department (as a part of your Education Plan).


PhD courses - UMB
Here you will find PhD courses offered by UMB (courses at level 400).  Courses at Masters degree level (level 300) may also be included in the Academic training component. You can search for relevant courses in the course catalogue. In case UMB does not offer a relevant course, individual course work at the PhD level may be conducted. An Agreement on individual course work must be signed by you and the course responsible person/department, to clarify the content of the course work.

Address questions on course content to the course responsible person, on how and when to register for a course to sit@umb.no.

Course in Academic writing

The Department of Academic Affairs offers courses in academic writing twice a year. The next course will be arranged 13 -16 May 2013. Participants should be actively writing on articles / thesis. Information on the course.

PhD courses - University of Oslo (UiO)
Many PhD students at UMB attend courses at the University of Oslo. When planning, it is important to consider quite far ahead of startup, when and how to apply, register for the course etc.


Research Schools
Research schools offers PhD courses to their members and/or to other PhD candidates.

UMB is involved in the following national and international research schools:

NordForsk PhD courses
NordForsk PhD courses (the webpage includes also other events as seminars) 
NordForsk is an organisation under the Nordic Council of Ministers that provides funding for Nordic research cooperation as well as advice and input on Nordic research policy. NordForsk works to enhance added value to existing research activities in the Nordic countries, and thereby strengthen the position and influence of Nordic research, both in Europe and globally.

NOVA PhD courses

NOVA offers PhD courses in a wide range of topics.
The Nordic Forestry, Veterinary and Agricultural University Network (NOVA) courses are taught by leading researchers and are great meeting places for PhD students working in similar scientific fields.

Courses are free of charge (including accommodation) for PhD students registered on any of the NOVA member universities/faculties*. Students from other universities are welcome if place is available, but must pay course fee and accommodation. Students from other Nordic universities and from any of the BOVA university network members and are relieved from course fee (but not accommodation). MSc students with required background may be admitted to the courses.

Admission to courses is handled by the respective course administrator.

PhDPortal.eu is a database on degree courses (and programmes) at a big number of universities and schools in United Kingdom, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Spain, France, Italy and 29 other European Countries, including the EU (European Union). The portal cover many academic fields; Business, Economics, Social Studies, Natural Sciences, Law, Engineering, Humanities, Environmental Science.
