'The role of mathematical modeling in hypothesis-driven cell biology – a survey of models in bioinformatics and systems biology' - Olaf Wolkenhauer (H175, at 1415)

A new paradigm should challenge the way research has been conducted previously. In my presentation, I am going to argue the case for systems biology, defined as a merger of systems theory with cell biology.
Systems biology signals a shift of focus away from molecular characterization towards an understanding of functional activity.
Relatively simple biochemical reaction networks demonstrate that an understanding of cell function demands a hypothesis-driven approach:
data do not speak for themselves. I am going to discuss the role mathematical modelling and different kinds of models in the life sciences. The aim for this presentation is to convince the experimentalists that there is nothing more practical than a good theory (model)!

Additional information

Professor Wolkenhauer is here for Arne Gjuvsland's dissertation the day before. I have told Wolkenhauer: 'If you could include genetics' role in the system biology approach it would be preferable. I think your talk would be relevant anyhow. The audience will presumably primarily be PhD students in genetics and breeding, but also their advisors and other researchers.'

After the lecture in H175 there will be a gathering in Kantina next to H175 with (free) pizza, salad and drink and for further discussion.

We try to follow up with 'Little saturday' contribution, and there will be a possibility for 1-2 daring(?) PhD students to ask for input from members of the audience to their research projects.

The Research school in Systems Biology have a special invitation due to the topic. T
