UMB is a government-owned university, headed by an elected rector and an appointed director.
The university is governed by the board which consists of a majority of members elected by faculty, staff and students and a minority of external members appointed by the Ministry of Education and Research. The Board consists of 11 representatives and is chaired by rector Hans Fredrik Hoen. In addition, the Board has three other internal scientific members of staff, one technical/administrative member of staff, four external representatives and two students.
