Introduction Programme 2010

Student Information Centre

The week-long introduction programme will introduce you to UMB's lively student community and to those programmes and services that may help you as you arrive and settle.


New students at UMB

For the introduction programme we welcome:
- New exchange students
- New students in the English taught bachelor and master programmes

Friday 30 July
Students arrive
14:00-18:00 Registration possible at TF building, bring passport and laptop

Saturday 31 July    
Students arrive, some registration possible

18:00 - ??? Grilling and Rummage Sale at Pentagon - buy used clothes and kitchen equipment!

Sunday 01 August   
Students arrive, some registration possible

12:00-13:00 Tour of the Norwegian Museum of Agriculture and ice cream afterwards
14:00-18:00 Registration possible at TF building, bring passport and laptop

Monday 02 August   
Location: Ceremonial Hall (Festsalen), Clock Building

8:00-8:30            Reception area to collect your start up packet 
                          (a light snack will be served)
8:30-9:30            Norwegian language lesson
9:30-12:00          Official welcome by
                            - Rector: Hans Fredrik Hoen 
                            - Head of Academic Affairs: Ole Jørgen Torp
                            - Housing Director: Pål Magnus Løken
                            - University Chaplain: Georg Børresen 
                            - President of UMB Student Board: Ole Martin Steien

                           Session 1
                             ¤ Group 1 (for those students who need to cash a check)
                                  - Trip to the post office (Passport required)
                                  - Location: Meet in front of Samfunnet after lunch
                             ¤ Group 2 (EU/EEA/EFTA citizens with last name 
                                              beginning with A-M)
                                   - Obligatory registration and information
                                   - Location: TF building
                             ¤ Group 3 (EU/EEA/EFTA citizens with last name
                                              beginning with N-Z) 
                                   - Intercultural Games
                                   - Location: Ceremonial Hall
14:15-15:15         Session 2
                             ¤ Group 1: Collection of the following documents: 
                                Passport, passport photo, letter from
                                UDI/Norwegian Embassy and Housing Contract. 
                                     - Location: Student Information Centre (SiT)      
                             ¤ Group 2: Intercultural Games
                                     - Location: Ceremonial Hall
                             ¤ Group 3: Obligatory registration and information

15:30-16:30         Session 3

9:30-11:45           Where to find info on academic matters on the internet
                             - Rules and Regulations, Student Information Centre
                             - Information on UMB-network, Fronter, your study plan
                             - Student card
                             - Student registration TF01
                             - Access to computer network and email
12:00-12:45        Lunch at Samfunnet
13:00-13:45        Ceremonial Hall (Festsallen), Clock Building
                               - Information regarding health and nutrition during 
                                 your stay in Norway.
13:45-14:30        Environmental Awareness, Heikki Fjelldal     
14:30-15:30        Guided tour of campus

Wednesday 04 August
Trip to Oslo, 8:45-late

8:45                   The bus will leave from GG-Hallen at 9:00 sharp!
                          In Oslo, we will visit:
                               - Nobel Peace Centre
                               - The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History
                               - Grønland with its markets, shops and lively 
                                 environment.
                               - Lunch and dinner is provided while in Oslo
19:30                  Return by bus from Oslo to Ås around 19:30

Thursday 05 August      
Location: Ceremonial Hall, Clock Building

8:30-9:30             Norwegian language lesson
9:30-12:00           “Follo Bedriftshelsetjeneste”

                                - Health and hygiene

14:15-16:00        Intercultural games

Friday 06 August
Location: Ceremonial Hall, Clock Building

8:00-9:00            Norwegian language lesson (NOTE: Earlier time!)
9:00-12:00          Cultural awareness
12:00-12:45        Lunch at Samfunnet
13:00-13:30        Living in Pentagon - How to prepare?
                          Maya and Tendai, former students, share their experiences
13:30-15:00        Intercultural games
15:00-16:00        International Student Union (ISU) General Assembly 
                          – Cake & coffee will be served

Saturday 07 August

8:00           Group Breakfast. 
                   - If you live in Pentagon, you will have breakfast in your 
                     dorm with your flatmates. 
                   - If you live in private homes or in Oslo, you are invited 
                     to come to Samfunnet for breakfast.
18:00          BBQ party at Pentagon

Monday 09 August

Official welcome at your department. The introduction week at your institute
begins. If you have not received the program for this week or have
questions, please contact the “faddersjef” for your institute.


Tuesday 10 August

Deadline for registering for Rebusløp to Oslo.

Wednesday 11 August

12:00-16:00        “Grass Course”
                          - Teams and student organizations at UMB will present 
                            themselves on this day.

16:00-19:00        "Follo Ligning," National Registry
                          (Apply for Norwegian ID)                               
                          - Location: Student Information Centre (SiT)
16:00-19:00         Sign up for the the trip to Oslo 
                          - Location: Student Information Centre (SiT)

Friday 13 August
Location: Aud Max

12:45           Matriculation of the new Bachelor and Master degree students,
                     - Dress up in your national dress.
                     - Make sure to come early and find your place.
21:00            "Grass Course" Continuation at Sammfunnet
                    
Saturday 14 August

Rebusløp "Scavenger Hunt" – Trip to Oslo. More information can be found here.

Sunday 15 August

11:00           Sports tournament outside of GG-hall 

Wednesday 18 August
Location: Yellow Room in the Economy Building

12:00-15:00  Tubeculosis screening for all students who are from outside EU and North America

Sunday 22 August
Location: Ås Church

11:00            Experience part of Norwegian culture - traditional church service translated to English
                    Students from all religions are welcome!
                    Coffee will be served after the service.
