International Environment and Development Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study seeking to develop basic knowledge within different social science disciplines, economics, resource management and ecology, and to analyze development issues in an interdisciplinary way.

Students are encouraged to examine societal and environmental change in a historical, comparative and global perspective.

The degree offers a good basis for further studies within areas such as Development Studies, Environment Studies, International Relations, Agro Ecology or Resource Management either at UMB or at other universities in Norway or abroad.

Candidates having completed this bachelor degree may seek employment within government services, national or international organizations or within development aid.

Internationalization and study abroad

Internationalization is encouraged in the classrooms as students are recruited globally and approximately 50% of the student body is international. The working language of this program is English.

Students may spend a semester abroad on exchange as an integral part of the degree. As elective courses students may also choose a field course in either Tanzania or India. Both these courses have duration of one month.

Learning goals

Students should become knowledgeable about both social and natural science approaches to the study of environment and development, and be able to combine different approaches.

The program gives students a basis for critical and academic thinking. Students should also acquire skills in collecting and analyzing information and presenting findings orally and in writing.

Teaching and evaluation methods

The various courses constituting the program offer a wide range of teaching and evaluation methods, ranging from traditional lectures to group discussions of case studies. Evaluations include written exams, term papers and oral presentations.

Program content
The program consists of compulsory and elective courses. The compulsory courses amount to 115 credits. The remaining 65 credits needed to complete the required 180 credits, can be chosen among courses at UMB or other universities.

Compulsory courses are taken in the first half of the program and the elective courses are taken in the last half of the program.

Specialization requirements

According to regulations for bachelor programs, students must have at least 80 credits within the core area of development studies. This is achieved by the compulsory courses in the program.
