Department of Academic AffairsIn 2005 Simen Sandve (27) finished his master’s degree in ecology. Now he is working as a PhD student at the Department of plant and environmental sciences.
Can you tell us about what you do for a living?
- I study the genes that influence the lignin synthesis in agricultural grass. Lignin is essential to the plants; it provides them with protection, rigidness and strength. But lignin can not be digested by the herbivores and therefore you want a low content of this in the fodder. Therefore it is important to know as much as possible about the genes that influence the lignin synthesis and thereby cultivate fodder with optimal lignin content. This is not genetical modification, just refining of natural grass.
Why did you start your studies here at UMB?
- I started here at Ås because of the natural resource management studies. I soon found out that I was more interested in pure biology than in management, and changed my master to Master in Ecology. This way I could focus on biology and ecology more than I could earlier. I am very happy with that choice!
How has your education been useful to you after your studies?
- My education gave me a professional network which has been very useful to me with regard to jobs, both as a research assistant at CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and now as a PhD student at UMB.
Do you have any advice for future students?
- Establish a professional network within different fields you come across during your studies. They can be very useful considering future opportunities for studies and work.
