Who can apply 

The Thor Heyerdahl Summer School in Environmental Governance is open for PhD students and young researchers who have completed their PhD degree within the last 4 years of the application deadline (February, 2012). Priority will be given to applicants from social science oriented programs or interdisciplinary (combined social and natural science) PhD programs.

Requirements
 

Applicants to the international Thor Heyerdahl Summer School in Environmental Governance are required to have the following in order to be considered: 
•    Be enrolled in a PhD program at a recognised University, or
•    Have completed PhD studies within the last 4 years and participate activly in research in a relevant field. Concerning area of study, see above.


The application must include:
•    A cover letter
•    Completed application form (deadline has expired for 2012)
•    Certified copy of your PhD degree (for young researchers only)
•    Proof of admission to a PhD programme (for PhD students only)
•    Certified copy of Master transcript (for all applicants)
•    Letter of reference
•    Proof of English proficiency
•    Copy of the main page of your passport
•    A short CV


Cover Letter
A one page Cover Letter should provide insights concerning the motivation of the candidate to follow the course as well as how and why the participation in the course will benefit the candidate’s research work and/or career. The candidate should describe her/his interest in environmental governance research. It should also describe how the other participants to the event could benefit from the type of experience and particular knowledge you possess.

Application Form
The Application Form should be completed electronically. All the fields must be filled in and all required documents should be uploaded or send to thss@umb.no.

Master transcript
A certified copy of the master degree and the transcript that includes the marks should be attached. The selected candidates will be asked to send us a hard copy of the certified transcript upon admission.

Letter of reference
One signed letter of reference is demanded. In case that the candidate is a PhD student, the candidate’s supervisor should preferably write the letter. The letter should inform about how well the referee knows the applicant. It should further give an honest evaluation of the relevant capacities of the applicant including her/his potential inputs to the course and capability to complete it successfully and English proficiency. The letter should also address the value of the course for the applicant’s research. More information for the referee you can find here.

Proof of English poficiency
Proficiency is demonstrated (if one’s mother tongue is not English) by a TOEFL score of 550/80 (paper/internet) or higher. For IELTS test the minimum score is 6.0. Other proof of english proficiency that can be accepted is a published article with the applicant as the main author. The article should be attached together with the other documents.

Short CV
The applicant should aim for a CV of maximum two pages.


Selection criteria 

To be eligible you must either be a PhD candidate enrolled in a social science oriented program or an interdisciplinary (combined social and natural science) program. A few places will also be offered to young researcher active in fields relevant to the course – see ‘Who can apply?’ When selecting the participants special emphasis will be put on the quality of the applicant and how well the course fits the plan of the PhD/the focus of the applicant’s research. We will also pursue gender, academic and regional balance. Given this, candidates from any academic institution in any country are eligible. A maximum of 25 students will be selected for each event.

We recommend you to bring some pocket money for snacks, washing clothes and other individual needs.
